KLAWOCK, May 14, 2010 — The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) Health Promotion department is hosting free health screenings for adults age 18 and older this month in Craig and Hydaburg. The free health screenings will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 27, at the SEARHC Hydaburg Health Center, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 28, at the Craig Community Association Office, 1330 Craig/Klawock Highway. Participants are encouraged to make 20-minute appointments for their health screenings, but they can be seen as walk-ins (be aware there may be a wait for walk-in patients). The biometric health screenings involve a simple blood test that gives people their non-fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) and blood pressure results. Health professionals will be available to discuss screening results with patients. While the biometric health screenings don’t replace a person’s annual visit to their medical provider, the screening results can let people know if they are at risk for chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease or stroke. For more information or to make an appointment for your health screening, contact SEARHC Community Wellness Advocate Rueben Chinana in Hydaburg at 285-3462 or SEARHC Community Wellness Advocate June May in Klawock/Craig at 755-4959.
### The SEARHC WISEWOMAN Women’s Health Program, in collaboration with the U.S. Office of Women’s Health, will sponsor the women’s health event “A Lifetime of Good Health” on April 20-23 in Hydaburg. This event includes a women’s health forum, with snacks, featuring guest speakers Judy Brown (a physician assistant in Hydaburg) and Susan Suarez (a WISEWOMAN women’s health educator) at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20, at the temporary SEARHC Hydaburg Health Center set up at the Hydaburg Boys and Girls Club building. On Wednesday and Thursday, April 21-22, will be a women’s annual screening clinic that takes place all day by appointment at the temporary Hydaburg Health Center. At noon on Friday, April 23, there will be a 45-minute nutritional talk on “Fats, Sugars and Salt” with guest speakers June May and Susan Suarez at the ANB/ANS Hall, and after the talk at 12:45 p.m. there will be registration for the Hydaburg Women’s Team in the upcoming Prince of Wales International Marathon on May 29. All participants in these women’s health events will be entered into a drawing for prizes.
